Son of William Christopher and Joan (nee Cowley) Ballenden, of Fernbank, Hilton Road, Natal. Husband of Daphne (nee Hall) Ballenden. Born Pietermaritzburg. Educated Hilton College and Wits University College. A mining engineering student at Wits before enlistment. Proceeded to England in September 1939 and joined the Officer Training Corps.
