Son of Edward and Alice Hale, of Red Hill, Durban, Natal. Born Battersea, London. Member of the Queens Park Swimming Club. An engine fitter with the SAR&H. Served with the Durban Light Infantry in GSWA 1914-1915; served with the 2nd Regiment in France; WIA (GSW to spine) at Bernafay Wood 13/7/1916. He was evacuated to Rouen, then Wandsworth, England; repatriated Durban; operation on spine to remove shrapnel 30/6/1917 successful - condition dangerous. Commemorated on the following WWI Memorials: Frere Rd Presbyterian Church; 'The Greenwood Park, Red Hill & Avoca' in Red Hill Cemetery, Durban North; the Queens Park Swimming Club, Durban North Swimming Pool; St. Mary?s Anglican Church, Greyville the Durban Light Infantry & the Durban Cenotaph & on the SAR&H WWI Memorials in Durban & Bloemfontein railway stations.
