Son of Alfred William and May Willett Shott Ethell, of The Rectory, Laidley, Queensland. State school teacher and student for Holy Orders; of Laidley, Queensland; born Kalk Bay, near Cape Town, South Africa, came to Australia when 8 years old; educated at state school and also privately; was a boy scout; joined AIF 13 August 1915, became a sapper in 6 Field Company Engineers, afterwards gaining a commission in the infantry; was wounded at Bullecourt in May 1917.
