Killed in action, Lancaster W4888 (SR-P), while returning to England from "Operation Sprat", the first major attack on Dortmund as part of the Ruhr Offensive, his aircraft was hit over the Ijsselmeer on the Frisian Coast, and crash-landed near Workum Railway Station, killing him instantly.
