Daughter of Mrs. E. H. Cole, of 46, Charminster Rd., Bournemouth and the late C. G. Cole, of Cape Town. Her father was a Colonial Government contractor. Emily was educated at Knole Hall High School, Bournemouth. Her nursing training was at Poplar Hospital from January 1908 to January 1911. She continued there as a staff nurse until the 14th January 1912. She enrolled into the QAIMNS on the 15th January 1912. Apparently Emily had a headache on Thursday 18th February. On Friday morning she fell unconscious onto the floor whilst dressing and was found by Miss Clements, the matron. Sir Bertrand Dawson was sent for and she was given some vaccine treatment from which she seemed to be positively responding. She was given a room to herself where she was lying unconscious apparently out of pain but breathing heavily. Her name was on a marble tablet in the chapel of Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital, Millbank, London which lists the names of the matrons, sisters and nurses of the military nursing services who died during WW1. The Millbank site was redeveloped and the memorial has been traced to the Royal Garrison Church, Farnborough Road, Aldershot, Hampshire. ref. South African Roll of Honour 1914-1918
