Son of Fernand Joseph and Sarah (nee Marshall) Cauvin. Born Liverpool. Educated Grey College, Port Elizabeth, General Botha Cadet Draft 1935-36. On completion with General Botha joined Andrew Weir and served in the Isipingo. After passing his Mate's certificate was appointed Third Officer, MV Derbyshire. During WWII Chief Officer Shell Tankers (D-Day, Salerno, South of France). In February 1945, when serving in the MV Anculus he was discovered to be suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis, from which he eventually died on 14th February 1947, his death being officially confirmed as attributable to War Service.
