Son of Sir Henry Richards, K.B.E., K.C., formerly Chief Justice of High Court, North-West Province, India, and Lady Richards. Educated Marlborough College from 1906-1909. In 1912, he attended the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. Whilst at University he was a member of the Officer Training Corps. On the outbreak of war Hubert attested for the army at Southampton on the 4th August 1914 and enlisted as a Private in the 9th Hampshire Regiment. On the 28th December 1914 he was granted a commission in the 5th Connaught Rangers. Commemoration stone in Pinetown (St. John's) Cemetery, Kwazulu Natal
