Born Mingoose, Cornwall, United Kingdom but his mother had been born in Grahamstown, Cape Province, South Africa in 1869 and married in Johannesburg his father born 13 Feb 1861 in Kea, Cornwall, United Kingdom. His father Richard Jose was a miner in Cornwall and it was this occupation that brought him to South Africa. The family returned to Cornwall during the Boer War but returned thereafter. An electrician
