Son of the Rev. J. Hoffe and Mrs. S. Hoffe; husband of Phyllis Maitland Ruxton (formerly Hoffe), of The Outspan, Lee-on-the-Solent, England. Born at Arklow, Ireland. Supplementary information from De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour; 3rd son of the late rev, John Hoffe, Rector of Kilbride, Arklow, by his wife, Susan Aitken (Merton, Arklow), dau, of Richard Couby; b, Kilbride rectory, Arklow, 9 December 1880; educ, Intermediate Schools, Kilbride; went to South Africa in 1901, and joined Baden-Powells Police Force in Jan, 1901, with which Force he served seven years; volunteered for service, and joined the Special Service Squadron of the Natal Carbineers as a Trooper in 1914, under Col, (then Major) George Morris; was given a commission as Lieut, in the Natal Carbineers; served throughout the rebellions of 1914 as Adjutant of the Special Service Carbineers; proceeded to German West Africa in 1915, and to German East Africa in Jan, 1917, and died in the Military Field Hospital at Dodoma, 23 Sept, following, from pneumonia, contracted while on active service. Buried there. Capt, Hoffe was awarded the King's Medal and Gallantry Badge for conspicuous bravery while serving with the South African Constabulary. He married at Johannesburg, 21 June, 1913, Phyllis Maitland, dau, of (-) Wood, and had a daughter, Nora Kathleen, b, 29 May, 1916.
