At 13.58 hours on 24 September 1942 the unescorted Roumanie (Master Emile Morb?e), a straggler from convoy SC-100, was torpedoed and sunk by U-617 about 380 miles southwest of Iceland. The chief engineer Pierre Suykerbuyk was found on a raft and taken prisoner by the U-boat and landed at St. Nazaire on 7 October. The master, 36 crew members and five gunners were lost. |
