Son of the late David Filtness, of Brighton, Sussex; also served in the German South-West African campaign. Prior to gaining his commission he had served as a Private in the 5th Mounted Rifles, serving in the German South-West African campaign. For his wartime services he was twice Mentioned in Despatches. Trained in London in the office of the architect Detmar Blow. He arrived in South Africa in 1909, joining the office of BAKER & FLEMING in Johannesburg for two years. In 1910, in collaboration with Gordon LEITH, he was placed second in the competition for the layout of Church Square in Pretoria: the central feature of his design being a column set in an oval pool and surmounted by a winged figure and crowns. From 1912 to 1914 he worked for REID & DELBRIDGE in Johannesburg and by 1917 he was working for the same partnership in Cape Town. He was a member of the Association of Transvaal Architects. ref.
