Information:
Son of William and Mary Cruickshank, of 3, Parson's Lane, West End, Kimberley, South Africa. Educated at the Christian Brothers' College Kimberley but was sent to Aberdeen to live with his uncle, Alexander, a pharmacist, as his father was unable to support the family. There he studied at Robert Gordon's College. In 1911 he came to the University of Glasgow to study the arts and later studied medicine, winning prizes in both areas. During his time at university Harold had been a member of the University of Glasgow Officer Training Corps and so postponed his studies to join the war effort, enlisting in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers in February 1915. On 27 May 1915, the Supplement to the London Gazette reported that he was promoted from Second Lieutenant to Lieutenant on 13th April 1915. Commemorated on CBC Kimberley / St Patrick's College; the Kimberley (panel 4) & the University of Glasgow War Memorial Chapel WWI Memorials
