On 25 Jun 1980, a Sergeant of 5 Reconnaissance Regiment led a platoon of twenty men searching for a SWAPO group. While they were investigating an explosion in the vicinity, they made contact with five of the enemy and killed one. Then, they were attacked by a much larger group, and while he was directing the defence, another large group attacked them, and they were fired on from two sides. The Sergeant calmly continued the defence but when their ammunition ran low, and the enemy began to surround them, he asked that the platoon to be taken out by air. Meanwhile, enemy mortars opened up on them and wounded one of his men. He then set up ambushes to hold back SWAPO until the helicopters arrived and organized the preparation of a safe landing area as well as the evacuation of his platoon. For his actions and bravery on this day, the Sergeant was awarded the Honoris Crux in 1981 |
