Sayino joined 1RAR in 1958, after which his ability and enthusiasm were reflected in his steady promotion through the ranks to his appointment as Platoon Warrant Officer in 1972. From 1973 to 1975 he acted as the Company Sergeant Major of JOC Mtoko. ref. "Rhodesian African Rifles Roll of Honour" by Adrian Haggett and Gerry van Tonder.
