Son of Tertia Hedenskog of Claremont, South Africa. Originally from South Africa. His memorial service was held at the Methodist Church in Brooklyn, Pretoria, and was packed with mourners. The church was so full that those who arrived late had to stand at the back. Young people, Hedenskog's friends from Valhalla Primary School, Sutherland High School in Centurion and Rhodes University, dominated the congregation. The Royal Marine's mother, Tertia, and sisters Megan and Eva, who live in Cape Town, attended. His father, Nick, who has been divorced from his mother for a number of years and lives in Johannesburg, did not attend. His father was in a nursing home in Johannesburg and had taken the news very badly. Hedenskog had joined the Royal Marines in November 2000 after leaving university with a degree in human movement studies. Apart from his stint in Iraq, Hedenskog had also served in Afghanistan. He was a member of the elite group of Marines known as Y Troop. |
