Killed in action, Dakota III KG472, detailed to carry out a special operational flight of infiltrate and evacuate in Yugoslavia to Tito’s HQ. On board was Major Randolf Churchill, the son of Winston Churchill and the novelist, Captain Evelyn Waugh who was then a Commando. At the landing strip at Bosnanski Dubicain Yugoslavia KG-472 attempted to go around again and performed normal overshoot procedures. KG-472 though rapidly gained height at first, but then lost height rapidly and crashed just beyond the flare path on an even keel with both engines under power. |
