Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. Left St. Andrew's in 1891. Educated at University College, Oxford and was ordained in 1904 and was vicar of St Michael?s Muncaster, Cumbria from 1907. Became an army chaplain in April 1917 and travelled to Egypt attached to the 74th Casualty Clearing Station
