Cause of Death:
Killed in action, by an artillery shell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, just before his platoon left their lines for an attack on the Redan Ridge. The 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade came under heavy fire from Ridge Redoubt and The Quadrilateral soon after leaving the trenches. They were driven back after heavy close quarter fighting and a German counter-attack. The Battalion sustained 474 losses
