Son of John Henry and Alice Hughes, of 8 Craven St., Newbury, Berkshire, England; formerly of Cradock, Cape Colony. Educated Dale College, King William's Town, Eastern Cape. A civil engineer. Served as a Private (#0378) with the 5th SA Mounted Rifles (Imperial Light Horse) in GSWA 1914-1915; travelled to England to re-enlist with the 300th Siege Battery, RGA; recommended for a commission 13/3/1916; served with the 156th Siege Battery, RGA in France. Commemorated on Dale College, KWT; the Cradock & Tarkastad, Eastern Cape WWI Memorials
