Son of William and Bessie Bamber, of 128, Pietermaritz St., Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. Born Ladysmith, Natal. Present during the Siege of Ladysmith during Boer War. Awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasp Defence of Ladysmith for services with the Natal Volunteer Medical Corps during the siege (as a thirteen year old!). Attended Maritzburg College October 1900 - June 1902. A clerk in the Treasury Department of the Natal Civil Service. Member of Natal Royal Regiment of Mounted Infantry with service in the Natal Native Rebellion of 1906. Commissioned as Second Lieutenant in Natal Militia 1908. Sailed to England June 1912 and enrolled at St Augustine's College Canterbury to train as a priest. Commissioned Second Lieutenant in 10th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 18 December 1914. Billeted at Maidenhead Spring 1915. Met Doris Anderson at All Saints' Church, Maidenhead, and got engaged to be married. Promoted Lieutenant 26 September 1915. By April 1916 was Company Commander of "D" Company. Remembered on Maritzburg College cenotaph. Remembered on John Walton Bamber Memorial, All Saints Church, Maidenhead
