From time to time we find references of South Africans or Rhodesians
who ARE NOT commemorated by CWGC. It happens. But in order to build a
case for commemoration we need help researching the men and their final
resting place if known. We'd need service files proving they died on service
or of a service related cause.
After we have done that we can put forth a case for commemoration to
the CWGC and hopefully they will either have their grave recognized, a
headstone erected where there is none or have their name put on one of
the memorials to the missing.
Below is our current listing of men (minus the SANLC men who number into
the 2000 range) who need research done on them.

Executed (shot) by court martial, at Pretoria Central Prison |
Jopie Fourie was born in the Pretoria district in 1878. He was a
scout and dispatch rider during the South African War, and was wounded
and captured in an action north of Pretoria. After the war he became
a captain in the Active Citizen Force, and in 1914 decided to join
the rebellion in protest against Prime Minister Louis Botha’s decision
to invade German South West Africa as part of the international war
effort against Germany. He was captured in the Rustenburg area on
16 December 1914 and was court-martialled. On 20 December of the same
year he was executed by firing squad. Jopie Fourie is seen as a traditional
Afrikaner Boer hero, standing up for his beliefs and Louis Botha was
severely criticised by many Afrikaners for reprieving Fourie. He died
singing the hymn ‘Als wij de doodsvallei betreen’. DEPOT SAB SOURCE

Killed in action, during bombing of Dresden |
L. P. Van Heerden was known as ‘Vic’ Van Heerden to his fellow members
of the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG). He was a member of the King’s
Royal Rifle Corps and had then transferred into the LRDG. Van Heerden
would have been a member of either S1 or S2 (Southern Rhodesian patrol)
of ‘B’ Squadron of the LRDG. He was captured in the Dodecanese Islands
on a operation with this unit in October 1943. Van Heerden, along
with a number of other Commonwealth soldiers, was press-ganged into
joining the BFC during his stay at Stalag III-A in Luckenwalde. This
Stalag was a special camp set up for the interrogation of POWs as
soon as possible after their individual capture in September and October
1943. The POW’s were often slightly wounded, or in shock, as they
were shipped to Luckenwalde. Once they arrived they were strip searched,
and forced to watch as their uniforms and identity papers were destroyed.
They were then placed on strict rations, and in some instances, forced
to only wear a blanket in their cell. All of the men were placed in
solitary confinement. These men were given the option of spending
the rest of the war in these conditions, or to join the BFC. A few
unfortunates would agree under this duress to give in to the pressure,
and these men were moved to the BFC headquarters on the Schonholtzerstrasse
in Pankow during October and November of 1943. The vast majority of
these men, after they overcame their initial treatment at the hands
of the Germans, would demand to leave the unit. Finally Van Heerden,
and the other men that wanted to leave, were sent to the isolation
camp at Dronnewitz just before Christmas 1943. At Dronnewitz, the
men were employed on local farms. Van Heerden is believed to have
returned to the BFC at some point, and during the bombing of Dresden
on February 12th, 1945 was killed. He was the only individual that
was killed during service with the BFC. |

At 05.31 hours on 30 Nov, 1942, the unescorted Cleanthis was shelled
by U-181 about 200 miles northeast of Lourenço Marques. The U-boat
scored about 70 hits with 80 rounds from the deck gun and fired its
last round from 400 metres into the waterline. At 06.55 hours, the
burning ship sank after holes were fired into the stern with the 20mm
AA gun. The survivors had abandoned ship in the last intact lifeboat.
The master and eleven crew members were lost. |

Died of pneumonia, due to rigours of campaigning |
Son of Finlay M. Ross, commercial traveller ; born Aberdeen, 31
October 1886 ; educated Aberdeen Grammar School; matriculated 1904;
graduated M.B., 1909 ; Assistant, Murray 's Asylum, Perth ; later
went to India as Medical Officer on S.S. "City of Paris". Subsequently,
in 1911, following a period of ill-health, he went out to South Africa,
where in a short space of time he developed an extensive private practice
at Wolmaranstadt and filled many public positions of importance. Ross
joined the R.A.M.C. at the outbreak of war and served in East Africa
throughout the entire campaign there. Later he took over control of
Klerksdorp Hospital to permit two resident medical men to serve in
France. His health, affected by the rigours of campaigning, was indifferent
and his duties as District Surgeon, Medical Officer of Health, and
Physician to the staff of six mines overtaxed his strength, he died
of pneumonia on 4 June 1917. His work on service was commended by
those under whom he directed the medical organization entrusted to
his particular care, and his personal popularity while at the University,
in the Army and in private practice was a tribute to his winning personality. |

Drowned at sea (from S.S. "Galway Castle"), as a result of an attack
by an enemy submarine 160 miles S.W. and .5 S. of the Fastnet |
Daughter of Walter Harding Bovell Addison and Rosalie Benoni Addison
of Kloof Station, Natal. Walter was born around 1859 at Kloof. In
1894 he was a sugar planter at Stanger. He served with the Natal Volunteers
during the Boer War and died in 1931. He married first, Rosalie Benoni
Colenbrander, daughter of John Arnold Colenbrander. They had four
children – Corie, Ernest, Alphonse and Rosalie. Walter’s wife died
and he then married his wife’s sister, Alice Colenbrander. They had
two children – Laura and Daphne. After being educated at St. Anne’s
College, Corrie became a nurse. She had worked overseas but after
the death of her brothers she set sail for South Africa in the SS
Galway Castle to be with her father. The ship was torpedoed on the
12th September 1918. Apparently Corrie gave up her place in a lifeboat
to another passenger and subsequently perished. Her name is not listed
under SS Galway Castle on the Tower Hill Memorial. One of her brothers
was 2nd Lieutenant Alphonse Colenbrander Addison who was with the
2nd Regiment, South African Infantry. He died on the 12th October
1916, aged 20. and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, pier and
face 4C. The other brother was Lieutenant Ernest Colenbrander Addison
who was with the same regiment and died on the 4th May 1918 aged 23.
He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, panel 15 – 16
and 16A. A sad case where a father lost three of his children to the
war. born Addington, Natal, South Africa, Died 12/9/18 |

Son of John Macdonald, wine merchant ; born Resolis, Ross-shire,
28 December 1881; entered the University in 1900 ; graduated M.B.,
1906 ; went to South Africa where he held various medical appointments
under Government, in German South West Africa, Bechuanaland, and Cape
Province, and later took up a large practice in Marydale, Cape Colony.
Early in the war Macdonald joined the Forces and served in West and
East Africa for about three years with the rank of Surgeon-Captain
; in 1915 he was appointed Senior Medical Officer by General Smuts.
For health reasons he had to retire from the Army, and he resumed
his practice, but the rigours of the campaign had undermined his previously
robust constitution and he died, 19 October 1918. |
