BEJA WAR CEMETERY

PLEASE NOTE: 6.11.2003 A horticultural project is being undertaken at this cemetery. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to visitors during this time. It should be noted that this is a steeply terraced cemetery with numerous steps, making wheelchair access impossible. The gates to the cemetery are not locked, so it is possible to visit the cemetery, including Saturdays and Sundays, when it is unstaffed. However, the register and visitors' book will not be available outside normal working hours, as they are kept locked in the gardeners' toolshed. The gardeners hours of work are: July and August (Summer Hours) Monday - Thursday 06.00 - 14.00 Friday 06.00 - 13.00 September - June (Winter Hours) Monday - Thursday 07.00 - 12.00 and 13.00 - 17.00 Friday 07.00 - 12.00 and 13.00 - 16.00 Month of Ramadan Monday - Friday 08.00 - 15.00. Beja is a town at the junction of three highways; 96 kilometres from Tunis, 150 kilometres from Souk Ahras and 76 kilometres from Tabarka. Beja War Cemetery lies just outside the northern limits of the town. Turn right after the railway crossing and the cemetery can be found 100 metres on the left. In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. On 8 November 1942, Commonwealth and American troops made a series of landings in Algeria and Morocco. The Germans responded immediately by sending a force from Sicily to northern Tunisia, which checked the Allied advance east in early December. Beja was just behind the limit of the advance that winter. Beja War Cemetery contains 396 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 87 of them unidentified.
