Killed in action, Liberator GR.V BZ753, his aircraft and another aircraft were sent out on an anti-submarine patrol. They were attacked by six JU88s. The other aircraft sought the protection of the clouds but Melville decided to fight it out

On Ruzawi Preparatory School War Memorial, near Marandellas, Rhodesia. Remembered on Diocesan College Roll of Honour. He attended Diocesan College 1933-37. His uncle (WW1) and twin brother (WW2) also died in service
