Died in Aircraft Accident, Liberator EV976, Captained by Captain Beukes 47891V on a nickling sortie to Crete. When over the island a recce flare fell from its rack onto the bomb bay doors and ignited. The order to bale out was given and Du Toit the rear Gunner bailed out . The rest of the crew stayed and extinguished the fire and the aircraft returned safely to base
