Additional Information
Son of Edward William and Mabel Eleanor Beatrice Rice. Born Claremont, Cape Town. A Trooper in the Southern Rifles, German South West Africa in 1915; Commissioned Second Lieutenant Royal Dublin Fusiliers 6 April 1916, joined Royal Flying Corps as Captain in 1917, remained in RAF as a career officer. Escaped from Singapore on the 16th February 1942 but was captured by the Japanese. Shipped from Palembang to Singapore on 18 July 1942. Then, in August he was shipped with the captured generals and other senior officers to Formosa on the hellship England Maru which arrived at Takao on 29 August. He was sent to the senior officers' camp of Karenko and held there until June 1943. Karenko Camp was closed and the POWs were transferred to Shirakawa Camp in southwestern Formosa
