For gallantry in action on 29 June 1977 - "On a Fireforce deployment there had been repeated contacts with a ZANLA gang some 20 strong. Van Niekerk displayed courage, skill and enthusiasm of the highest order, as he personally engaged the enemy close-up, accounting for several CTs himself.
