Citations:
 On 29 January 1958 the Sergeant while off duty attended to an armed robbery in progress at a petrol station in Wynberg, Johannesburg. After finding the petrol attendant lying on the ground with a bullet wound in his back, the Sergeant chased after one of the suspects, unarmed. The suspect fired two shots at the Sergeant, but the Sergeant was able to arrest the suspect with the firearm.
