Son of Lieut.-Comdr. E. J. (James Ernest) Capstick-Dale, and of (Ellen Marguerit) Marjorie Capstick-Dale; stepson of Mr. D. Stant, of Chingola, Northern Rhodesia. Born Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Educated Marist Bros. College Observatory, Johannesburg. General Botha Cadet Draft 1938-9. Joined the RN at the outbreak of war as a Midshipman and served in HMS Carnarvon Castle and HMS Shropshire. In January 1942 he joined th SAAF as a pupil pilot, receiving his 'wings' in July 1943.
