LG Sup 30 July 1919 pg. 9714 - "For conspicuous gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty as forward observation officer. He accompanied the infantry on October 14th, 15th, 19th and 20th, 1918. He obtained and sent back valuable information, and with his small party captured some forty prisoners. He was wounded at Belgiek on October 20th whilst attending a wounded infantryman under heavy shell fire. His conduct was exemplary and excited the admiration of all ranks." |
Son of Eldred Bawden. Born Rondebosch, Cape Town in October 1895. Educated at Mowbray School, thereafter at Fransch Hoek High School, finally matriculating at King Edward's School, Johannesburg. A member of South African Railways Rugby Football Club. Served with 1st South African Infantry in WW1. Later gazetted as Second Lieutenant in Royal Garrison Artillery, 112th Heavy Battery, being promoted to Lieutenant the following year. |
