LG Sup 31 December 1942 pg. 5667 - "During the night 23/24 October 1942 while attacking the strong point astride the Qattara track, the conduct of this detail was most exemplary. Apart from his normal task in the gapping team he made various recces of the minefield and suspected enemy positions, and brought back valuable information. When the rest of the team were pinned down he led his officer to a newly discovered booby trapped Tellermine field and assisted in the clearance. Operating with the Cape Town Highlanders on the night of 26/27 while the sappers were laying a minefield under impossible conditions, he showed outstanding courage. After assisting in the evacuation of the Sergeant who was seriously wounded, he returned to the job, and when movement was impossible volunteered to drive away the truck loaded with mines which was being fired at by the enemy anti-tank guns. Finally when the sappers were compelled to withdraw he remained behind in order to cover them with his Tommy Gun." |
