Cause of Death:
Missing in action. On the 12th October 1916, the 2nd and 4th S.A.I. attacked Snag and Tail Trenches. The assault died away because of machine guns nests, placed well back in prepared positions, which caught the attacking waves at long range.

Son of Mr. Christopher Washington and Mrs. Alberta Maggs Stumbles, of Balfour, Cape Province. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. Attended St Andrew's College for one year only - from January to December 1912. Boarder in Armstrong House. Played in the Armstrong House 1st XI during the inter-house cricket matches. Confirmed in June 1912. Won a prize for Maths. Fought in Delville Wood in July 1916. His brother also died in service. Commemoration stone in Balfour Main Cemetery, Eastern Cape
