Son of Anton Rector Kolbe Barry and Dorothy (nee Nankivell) Barry. Born Butterworth, Cape Province. Educated Victoria High School, Grahamstown; Cadet Draft 1932-3. Austen Kolbe Barry joined the Clan Line in 1934, in which he served during the first two years of the war. He then enlisted with the RAF.
