Son of Arthur Mowbray Jones and Clara Belinda Jones. Born Clifton, Bristol, England. Educated King's School, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Welsh Regiment as Second Lieutenant on 28 September 1895. Promoted to Lieutenant on 21 February 1898 and to Captain on 22 January 1902. He served in the operations in Sierra Leone in 1898-99 with the Protectorate Expedition and was slightly wounded (Medal with Clasp). He served in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) with the 1st Battalion Welsh Regiment. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Paardeberg.
