Cause of Death: |
Died in Aircraft Accident, Marauder III HD539, cloud in the Fano area hampered two aircraft in maintaining station in the second box and a third developed a spin while orbiting in formation off Fano. The pilot Lt W. R. Cloete, managed to correct the spin at about 240 m, jettisoned his bombs at sea and returned to base. Two air-gunners had meanwhile obeyed instructions to jump. In spite of immediate air-sea rescue action, no trace of them was found. This made a sad Christmas for the survivors, who feared that W/O D.M. Hamilton and F/Sgt D.W. Evans, RAF had died of exposure in the bitterly cold wintry sea |
