Information:
Son of James and Ellen French, of Ellis Street, Bulfane Vale, Port Elizabeth. Born Port Elizabeth. A carpenter. Served with 4th Mounted Rifles in German South West Africa. Re-enlisted on 23 November 1915 as #2033 6th Regiment, South African Infantry for service in German East Africa. On 5 January 1916, Private French became a Machine Gunner on the Vickers medium machine gun. Originally buried on the field at Fingerita, alongside his officer (Lt. W. Anderson) and his two 6 SAI comrades (L/Cpl. J. Laidlaw and Pte. S. R. Rhodes), all who died the same day.
