LG Sup 9 November 1944 pg. 5131 - "Captured during the defence of Tobruk on 24 June 1942, Roets and du Toit, were at Camp 82 (Laterina) at the time of Armistice. They left Laterina without much difficulty on 11 September 1943, only to be recaptured by Fascists three days later, handed over to the Germans and taken back to camp. Whilst being marched to the station for entrainment for Germany on 17 September 1943, they broke away from the column and although they were fired upon, made good their escape. They reached Onano, when they were betrayed and recaptured on 18 November 1943. Three days later they were entrained for Germany, and after spending most of the night in breaking the wire over the window with their bare hands, they jumped from the train near Terni, although it was travelling at 30 mph. They made their way to Monte Rotondo, moving to Tivoli at the end of January 1944. For six months they were sheltered by an Italian family until the Allied troops arrived on 6 June 1944." |
