Born in Australia before being naturalised in South Africa where he grew up. He attended St. Charles College in Pietermaritzburg and after matriculating, returned to Australia where he joined the United States Marine Corps. He is one of three South Africans killed during the Vietnam War. Commemorated on Panel 45W, Row 15 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
