Son of Jack Alliston and Margaret Whittingham, of Leicester, England. Born Leicester, England. Educated at Stoneygate College school in Leicester. His parents divorced around 1947 and his mother took him to South Africa where she had relatives. He attended St. John's College, Johannesburg. While working in Johannesburg he joined the Transvaal Horse Artillery. Was the first recipient of the Armstrong Kelly Cup in 1956.
