Murdered, he accompanied his labourers to Camperdown to pay their taxes. That night, a servant handed him a note whilst he was sitting on his verandah. As he turned to the lamp light to read it, he was stabbed to death

Husband of Sarah Ann Smith. He had 6 children. Born Pinetown in 1862. An Umlaas Road farmer and popular master. In the subsequent trial the servant admitted that he had resented paying his tax, and had killed his master for that reason
