Son of Joseph Thimbleby, of 62 Station Road, March, Cambs. Born at Beaufort West, South Africa and at the time of his enlistment (4th September 1914) he was living at 67 Station Rd, March and he was employed as an engineering apprentice at the Chatteris Engineering Works. Whilst in South Africa he had been a member of the Cadet Corps. He was 5ft 8ins tall. He was posted to France 10th July 1915. Sometime between that date and 6th Sept 1915 he was buried in a collapsed trench suffering a collapsed lung. He returned to England 7th Sept 1915. His records show him as suffering from bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma which resulted in him attending various military hospital including Shornecliffe. He was discharged as being permanently unfit for further service 30th September 1916. He is shown as living in Truro at the time of his discharge. He died at 67 Station Road, March from pneumonia and heart failure. His father Joseph was present at his death. Listed on the March War Memorial |
