When the enemy had put down a heavy barrage, thereby preventing the advance of his convoy, he made a daring personal reconnaissance, accompanied by a battery serjeant-major, to ascertain the best means of progress, and, after three attempts, he eventually got through, with only one driver and two horses killed.
