Son of Anthony Wilson Shaw and Amy Shaw, of Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia. Born Woodstock, Cape Town. Educated Ceres High School; Cadet Draft 1934-5. On leaving General Botha Douglas Shaw joined the Royal Navy as Able Seaman and served in HMS Royal sovereign, HMS Royal Oak, and finally HMS Neptune, when she was lost at sea.
