Killed in action, at 11:40 a.m. Scarpa with two soldiers was sent to investigate the anti-personnel mines that had been placed by the South Africans themselves. The patrol accidentally detonated one that killed him and wounded the other two soldiers, one of which L. D. Oosthuizen died of. The event took place at the Medici Villa dell'Ambrogiana near the Arno river, which was then the seat of a psychiatric hospital
