Son of Edward and Gertrude Saunders, of Tongaat, Natal, South Africa. Educated at Hilton College, Natal. Played in the Harrow Football XI in 1914 and was Captain in 1915; Officer Training at Sandhurst Army College, England 1916; served with the 2nd Battalion in France 1917-1918. Remembered on a brass plate in the church of St Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden, Essex, England. His original wooden cross tag was found in 2020
