Information:
Son of William Mercier. Brother of Mrs. C. J. Hughes, of Calcutta, India. Born Mauritius. Educated University of Glasgow for just one year between 1914 and 1915 and took subjects related to Engineering (Maths, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and Physical Laboratory). During this time he was also a member of the Officer Training Corps which prepared him for his time in the army. In February 1915 Victor was made Second Lieutenant and was gazetted to the 3rd Royal Scots Fusiliers. ref. South African Roll of Honour 1914-1918. ***CWGC has Y W as initials
