Son of William Hart Mason and Elizabeth Agnes Mason, of Knysna, Cape Colony, South Africa. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. Born 25/2/1889, was at St Andrew's from 1907-1908, got rugby, cricket and athletics colours. Went to Europe after leaving school and joined SA Infantry when war broke out, was serving as 2nd Lieutenant in 1st West Yorks when he was killed
