Educated at the University of Cape Town, graduating M.A. with distinction and winning a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford, where he took the degrees of B.M., B.Ch.(Oxf) in 1926. In 1932 he obtained the F.R.C.S. and shortly afterwards returned to Johannesburg, where he became registrar and later assistant surgeon to the General Hospital. He entered the S.A.M.C. in 1941.
