Information:
Son of Major Richard James and Mary Anna Hotchkis, Crookston House, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Born Crookston. Educated High School of Glasgow. A farmer in Rhodesia. Joined the Rhodesian Rifles in December 1914 and marched with them 600 miles to German East Africa afterwards returned to England. Joined the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps 27 June 1915 and obtained a commission 22 December following, served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from December 1916. His Colonel wrote "Whenever the Battalion was in action he was always in the thick of it, when his dash and courage won for him the admiration, confidence and affection of us all".
