Brother of E. R. Horsfall, of Station Colliery, Witbank, Transvaal. Born at Melbourne, Australia. 20th July 1874. Enrolled Melbourne Law School 1890. Cambridge-Street State School, Collingwood, of which his father was Headmaster; Scotch College; Ormond College; BA, LL.B. Melbourne; LL.B. Cape University; maiden fours 1894. After admission to Victorian bar, went to South Africa during Boer War and became Crown Prosecutor, and ultimately a Resident Magistrate on the Rand. Was given leave to enlist in August 1916, and joined 71st Siege Battery South African Heavy Artillery as Gunner; promoted Corporal; to France 1 January 1917; evacuated to hospital 14 June 1917; rejoined battery 9 July 1917.
