AVONDALE (ST. MARY MAGDALENE) CHURCH CEMETERY

This cemetery is situated in Harare, there is 1 burial of the 1939-1945 war.

BULAWAYO (ATHLONE) CEMETERY

Bulawayo (Athlone) Cemetery is a large Civil Cemetery in Bulawayo town. The point to start from is Empire House, the Legion Branch and Headquarters, which is located on the corner of 6th Avenue and Main Street. Drive north along Main Street for a distance of 1 kilometre towards a crossroads where Main Street becomes Athlone Avenue. Continue for a further 2 kilometres and the Civil Cemetery will be found on the right. The Commonwealth War Graves plot, with the Cross of Sacrifice, is easily located within the cemetery. Bulawayo (Athlone) Cemetery belongs to the Town Council. (Here was buried Sir Charles Coghland, the first Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia; but in 1930 he was reburied 43 kilometres away on the Matopo Hills, near the graves of Rhodes and Jameson). There are 7 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and a further 133 of the 1939-1945 war. There are also 24 non world war burials and 6 German burials.

Bulawayo (Lady Stanley Avenue) Cemetery is located by the hospital approach from Lady Stanley Avenue. (The Cemetery is near Mziligazi Village). The point to start from is Empire House - branch and headquarters of the Legion - located on the corner of 6th Avenue and Main Street. Drive north along Main Street for a distance of 1 kilometre towards a crossroads where Main Street becomes Athlone Avenue. At the crossroads, turn right into the Old Falls Road and drive for 2 kilometres. Turn right onto a dirt track and the cemetery will be found 600 metres along this track. Within this cemetery will also be found the Bulawayo African Memorial. There are 49 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war, 8 of which are unidentified. There are also 7 non world war burials.

BULAWAYO AFRICAN MEMORIAL

The Bulawayo African Memorial commemorates servicemen who died in the Second World War. The Memorial is situated within Bulawayo (Lady Stanley Avenue) Cemetery, which is by the hospital approach from Lady Stanley Avenue. (The Cemetery is near Mziligazi Village). Starting from Empire House - branch and headquarters of the Legion - located on the corner of 6th Avenue and Main Street, drive north along Main Street for 1 kilometre to a large crossroads where it becomes Athlone Avenue. At the crossroads turn right into the Old Falls Road and drive for 2 kilometres. Turn right onto a dirt track and the cemetery will be found 600 metres along this track. The memorial has 66 Commonwealth casualties of the 1939-1945 war commemorated.

When entering Chegutu from Harare in the direction of Giveru, at the first main crossroads turn left into Seigneury Road, after 1 kilometre turn right. The Cemetery is 500 metres down the track.

CHIVHU CEMETERY

Chivhu Cemetery in Mashonaland is approximately 160 kilometres south of Harare on the main road from Harare to Mvuma - Masvingo.

FORT RIXON MILITARY GRAVE

63 kilometres from Gweru town centre on the Bulawayo Road is a Post Office to the left and a store and petrol station to the right of the road. 500 metres further on turn left at the signpost for Fort Rixon and Greystones, this is the 100 kilometre mark from Bulawayo. Drive 10 kilometres to a T Junction and turn right in the direction of Fort Rixon. Fort Rixon is a little gathering of dwellings just 20 kilometres past the Shangani (Albany Farm) grave. The grave is in the Police Barracks in the far right hand corner under a large fig tree.

GWERU CEMETERY

The Commonwealth War Graves plot is in the top right hand corner of the Gweru (formerly Gwelo) Civil Cemetery, which is located just beyond a roundabout. To reach this roundabout start from the clock tower situated in the middle of a large crossroads in the middle of the town, and drive west for 12 kilometres. Within the cemetery is the Gweru Cremation Memorial commemorating a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. There are 86 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war here and 21 non world war burials.

HARARE (PIONEER) CEMETERY

Harare (Pioneer) Cemetery is a large town cemetery in which there are two War Graves Plots, both marked by a Cross of Sacrifice. From Unity Square (town centre) proceed 200 metres on 2nd Street and turn right into Jason Mayo Avenue. Proceed for 2 kilometres keeping to the right, and turn left at the lights into Rotten Row. Proceed for a further 2 kilometres passing over a large flyover. At the crossroads turn right and you will find the entrance to the Cemetery 200 metres further to the right. Also within the War Graves Plot is the Harare Cremation Memorial, commemorating a member of the Royal Air Force, and the Harare Memorial, commemorating 66 men of the Rhodesia Native Regiment and British South Africa Police. There are 27 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and a further 224 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war in this cemetery.

On entering Kadoma, take the first road right. There is an old railway engine on the corner (museum). Drive to a crossroads 1 kilometre away, turn right and drive a further 700 metres to a street to the right. The Cemetery is on the corner. The two graves are numbered 150 and 601.

SHANGANI (ALBANY FARM) GRAVE

65 kilometres from Gweru town centre on the Bulawayo Road there is a Post Office to the left and a store and petrol station to the right of the road. 500 metres further on turn left at the signpost for Fort Rixon and Greystones. This is the 100 kilometres mark from Bulawayo. Drive 10 kilometres to a T Junction, turn right and drive 6 kilometres in the direction of Fort Rixon. The farm house is the only house on the left of the road.
